The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) showcased its vibrant innovation ecosystem at HKTDC’s Entrepreneur Day (E-Day) 2025, held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 4–5 December. Led by the Centre for Pre-incubation and Outreach (CPO) and supported by senior leadership -- including Vice-President (R&D) Prof. Chetwyn Chan and Associate Vice-President (KT & Sustainability) Prof. Ken Yung -- the University reaffirmed its commitment to transforming academic research into impactful solutions across diverse fields, from AI and biotechnology to cultural tourism and materials science.
Aligned with HKTDC’s theme, "Where Start-up Dreams Take Flight," EdUHK’s participation emphasized a truly multidisciplinary approach that pushes beyond traditional boundaries. A key highlight was the “EdUHK Innovate: Entrepreneurship in the AI Era” pitching session, where students and faculty presented pioneering projects to a distinguished audience of investors and industry leaders. The pitching session showcased a remarkable array of innovative projects, vividly demonstrating the talent and applied research within the university community. Dr. Jinping Cheng (Assistant Professor of Department of Science and Environmental Studies) and her PhD students, Mr. Linus Lo and Mr. Jingyu Liu, unveiled their Cost-effective Passive eDNA Sampling system -- an innovative environmental monitoring tool set to revolutionize biodiversity assessment through accessible, efficient data collection.
Other standout projects included:
- Ms. Iris Yang (EdUHK alumna): Presented Dynafix3D, an AI-assisted 3D-printed fracture cast, and Hekate, a smart medical training system combining virtual reality with physical simulation;
- Mr. Zihao Qiu: Introduced Phemson Innovation, utilizing a patented, non-toxic polymer for sustainable antimicrobial applications;
- Dr. Eric Sze: Showcased Onycure and Thunderbolt , non-biocidal antimicrobial products derived from advanced materials;
- Ms. Ayeisha Shafana: Captivated the audience with Street Pulse -- a mobile app that offers personalized cultural insights and community-driven tourism experiences, exemplifying social and cultural innovation.
The event’s bustling booth attracted regional and international investors eager to explore EdUHK’s diverse projects -- notably Dr. Fu Hong’s (Associate Professor, Department of Mathematics and Information Technology) world’s first prototype machine for an Intelligent Ocular Misalignment Measurement System. Several startup teams also participated in exhibitions organized by the Home and Youth Affairs Bureau and the Hong Kong Exporters' Association, earning awards and further recognition, including medals at the Asia Exhibition of Innovations and Inventions Hong Kong.
Participants expressed heartfelt appreciation for EdUHK’s role in their entrepreneurial growth. Ayeisha summarized: "EdUHK's CPO team has been instrumental in shaping our pitch and connecting us with meaningful investor conversations. Their guidance helped us articulate our value, understand market needs, and accelerate our growth trajectory." Iris thanked the university for providing exhibition opportunity, remarking, “It exceeded our expectations. CPO helped us connect with high-quality international resources and investors -- facilitating funding -- and provided strategic guidance for our long-term development.” Zihao echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the event’s value as a platform for meaningful exchange. “Engaging deeply with other startup teams offered us diverse insights, and the interest from potential partners was inspiring. These market signals motivate us to refine our products and pursue broader collaborations for commercial success.”
In addition to student and alumni teams, the presence and support of Professors Prof. Alfredo Bautista (Associate Head of the Department of Early Childhood Education) and Prof. Philip Yu (Professor at the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology, and the Associate Director of the University Research Facility of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence) underscored EdUHK’s strategic commitment to translating academic excellence into practical solutions.
Closing the event, EdUHK mobilized its entire community -- faculty, students, and alumni -- to experience these solutions advancing sustainability, health, and social impact. This collective effort reaffirmed the university’s position as a nexus of comprehensive innovation, seamlessly integrating research, education, and real-world application. Participation in E-Day 2025 marks the start of ongoing collaboration, idea exchange, and momentum toward fostering impactful innovation and entrepreneurship on a global scale. EdUHK remains dedicated to nurturing the next generation of changemakers and creating meaningful societal impact through its vibrant innovation ecosystem.
